Akbari Haveli Gujrat – A Timeless Legacy of Mughal Grandeur and History
Akbari Haveli, located in the historic city of Gujrat, stands as one of the most remarkable architectural and historical landmarks of the region. Its story begins in the late sixteenth century during the glorious reign of Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar. At that time, Gujrat was an important passage on the route to Kashmir, a destination frequently visited by the emperor. The fertile lands between two rivers, the lush green fields, pleasant climate, and the flowing sweet waters of the region deeply attracted Akbar’s attention. Recognizing the strategic and cultural importance of the city, he ordered the construction of a grand fort in Gujrat and appointed his trusted official Kaka Mehta Mal to govern and redevelop the area.
The fort of Gujrat was built on the highest mound of the ancient settlement known as Odhay Nagri, today called “Dhakki.” Successive rulers and administrators, including Qasim Khan and Kahar Das Khatri, contributed to the completion and beautification of the fort. During the reign of Emperor Jahangir, further decoration and development were carried out under the supervision of Dianat Rai Khatri.
Among the most distinguished structures within the fort was Akbari Haveli, a magnificent residence designed especially for the emperor’s stay during his journeys to Kashmir. Since it was built on the highest point of the city, the haveli symbolized royal prestige and authority. The mansion was crafted with extraordinary skill and elegance, featuring underground chambers, arched corridors, circular rooms, artistic stairways, balconies, and beautifully designed windows. Every corner reflected the mastery of Mughal architecture and craftsmanship.
The haveli was not merely a residence but a masterpiece of engineering and art. Its central circular chamber served as the royal court, where rulers and governors conducted affairs of state. The design allowed fresh air entering from the main gate to flow directly through the chamber, providing natural ventilation even during extreme weather. Secret underground passages and basements added mystery and security to the structure, hinting at hidden tunnels whose destinations remain unknown.
Walking through the haveli even today feels like stepping back into the Mughal era. Visitors pass through the grand entrance into spacious courtyards and airy halls where guards once stood in attendance. Wooden staircases echo with the memories of the past, while the rooftop offers breathtaking views of the old city and the flowing waters of the Chenab River in the distance.
Throughout history, Akbari Haveli witnessed periods of glory as well as destruction. During the Sikh era, wars and conflicts damaged many important buildings of Gujrat, and the haveli also suffered greatly due to its strategic importance. Historical accounts mention that Maharaja Gulab Singh later restored parts of the building for administrative and ceremonial use. Maharaja Ranjit Singh is also believed to have stayed in this haveli during his visit to Gujrat.
Following the British annexation of Punjab in 1849, the haveli was renovated once again. British officers repaired and redesigned portions of the upper structure with influences of European and Greek-style architecture. Deputy Commissioner Paske, remembered for his developmental works in Gujrat, transformed the haveli into a residence and committee hall for colonial officials.
After the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, the haveli came into the possession of Khawaja Muhammad Taqi, who migrated from India. Over time, it became known as Imambargah Hussainia Gujrat. Later, the building was lovingly preserved by his daughter, Mrs. Bilqees Zahra, a retired teacher who dedicated her life and resources to maintaining the haveli’s historic beauty and cleanliness. Her efforts played a vital role in protecting this priceless heritage for future generations.
Today, Akbari Haveli remains a silent witness to centuries of Mughal grandeur, Sikh conflicts, British colonial history, and the cultural evolution of Gujrat. More than just a building, it is a living monument that carries within its walls the memories, mysteries, and soul of the city’s rich past.
